Wild Water ---------- A 1 or 2 player game. The object of the game is to row through 8 gates in numerical order. Points are awarded depending on the time taken to row between gates and deducted for rowing through the wrong one. To load the game type LOAD"" and press ENTER and PLAY on tape (at start of side A). You will then be prompted to load in the first 2 courses which are at the start of side B. Once loaded the title screen will alternate with the scoretable until you press a key. With the title screen present you can select one of 3 options. The colon indicates the current selection and the player with the inverted colon can change their option if desired. OPTION 1 - Keyboard control. OPTION 2 - Kempston Interface control. One player only can use this option. OPTION 3 - Not playing. When ready to play press ENTER (this is ignored if both players are on OPTION 3). Now type in your name/s. LEFT/RIGHT moves the cursor and REVERSE key picks out the letters. Both players can type in their names at the same time. Press ENTER again and the game will begin. NOTE: You have 5 minutes maximum to complete each course. (The canoeists left blade is black and right blade is transparent). From the diagram you will see that rowing forward makes you in control of the nose of the canoe while in reverse you control the back. For instance, pressing and releasing the left key a few times causes the nose of the canoe to turn left (towards the black blade), with the reverse key held down the back of the canoe turns left. To row STRAIGHT and SPEED up you must press LEFT then RIGHT alternately. Holding the REVERSE key as well will make you row backwards. As in all rivers there is a current. It flows in different directions depending on where you are and is generally from east to west. At the end of each river is a large "one way" waterfall, weirs and eddies (sharp slopes and still currents). Being able to read the current is a big advantage. Here are two examples of areas that are included in the game: +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |/////////////////////------\////////////////////////////////////////////| |//////////////// | \///////////////////////////////////| |////////// __/ <---- \////////////////////////////| |/////// SPLASHES \ \///////////////////| |///// __/ ------ \///////////| |/// \_ _/ CURRENT \ \////| | ---- --- --------- | | ////////\ \ | | ____----- /////////////////\ -------- | | __/ ///////////////////////////////\ \ | | __STILL /////////////////////////////////////////\ | | / ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////\ | || //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////| |////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////| +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Not all splashes are animated. Note: as the current flows generally westwards that splashes are always on the right side of banks and still currents always on the left. +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | / WEIR \ | | / | /------- \ | | ------CANOE------> | / /------- | | | | | / /------ | | | | / /------ | | | | /----- | | | | | /----- | | | ------CANOE--------> | /---- | | | | | /---- | | | | /--- | | | | /--- | | | | -- | | | -----------------------CANOE----------------------------> | | \ - / | | \ - / | +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Only at the very bottom is the weir low enough for a boat to row through EASTWARDS. To give some variation in the game the first 7 gates are randomly positioned, gate 8 is permanently fixed. When one half of the river is in use the other half is clear and you are at will to row there. Rowing fast will allow other actions to be executed faster and more effectively. Turning your boat is done by pressing and relasing the same key repeatedly (just as you would insert and pull out one of the blades in the water), the quicker this is done the faster you will turn. If you stop rowing straight your boat will slow down to a halt and the canoeists arms will be stationary, only the current will keep the boat moving. To swerve, hold down one key.
