SPECTUNE FOR 48K SPECTRUM XORSOFT SPECTUNE INSTRUCTIONS LOADING To load Spectune type LOAD "" & start the tape. Side A. Loads in two parts, the first part is the Demonstration & Instruction program; this provides brief instructions & an explanation of written music, & information about the main program. (Just follow the directions!) Side B. Contains the Main programme only. THE MAIN PROGRAMME. Once the Main programme has loaded, you are given a Menu to choose from: Crochet Length. Edit & Write. Learning Mode. Play a Tune. Recall. Tuning Mode. Save, Load, & Print THE KEYBOARD. The Spectrum keyboard is turned into a piano keyboard with 34 notes. The bottom row, Caps shift to space, are the lower white notes. A to L, are the black notes. Q to P, are the upper white notes, and 2 to 0, the upper black notes. This leaves 1,4,8,D,H. & Enter, for the use as control keys in various modes NOTE. Pressing Quit (Figure 1), will return you to the Menu. CROTCHET LENGTH. Sets or Alters the time value of a Crotchet, all other time values are regulated from this. (This does not alter the speed of a tune!) EDIT & WRITE. This fairly complicated routine provides full editing facilities; on selection, you are asked: Edit or Write?. Edit. The names of the tunes in the computer's memory (A B C etc.) are then displayed & you are given the options: Edit, Move, Delete. First Edit: This allows note by note editing; you are then asked, "SET KEY SIGNATURE". Press 'S' & you can then select the key you want by moving the cursor; pressing 'Enter' sets the key shown by the cursor. You are then asked "Set Time signature". Press 'S' & you can select a time signature by using the cursor. If you have selected a time signature, the tune now becomes subject to bar lengths (see below). The tune you have chosen can now be stepped through and edited. Press '4' to scroll the tune left and '8' to scroll it right. The note in the bright area can then be worked on. DELETE - by pressing D ALTER - by pressing Enter. You will now be prompted to SET NOTE - this is done by selecting the required note as if the Spectrum were a piano keyboard. When you have a note in the correct position on the stave, the time value can be selected by pressing H - at each press the time values - semibreve, minim, crochet etc - are cycled through. When satisfied with the note press Enter. You are now prompted to SET REST. This is done by pressing D - a rest will be put into the tune for the length of time you hold down the key and an appropriate rest sign (if any) will be displayed. Press Enter to return to the editing routine. If you don't want a rest, press Enter to return to editing. INSERT. A note and a rest can be inserted in front of the note displayed in the bright area. On pressing H, the note displayed disappears, it has been pushed to the right to make space for the new note. You are now prompted to select note and continue as above. BAR LENGTHS. If you have selected a time signature, bar lengths are worked out. For example, if you have selected 4/4 time, and the first few notes add up to exactly 4 crotchet lengths, then a bar line is shown on the screen. Suppose, however, the first 4 notes are 3 crotchets and a minim, then a bar of exactly 4 crotchet lengths is not possible, and the words "BAR ERROR" appear. In this case it is necessary to move right and alter the note values until a correct bar length is achieved. Note that scrolling RIGHT cancels the BAR ERROR message, and scrolling LEFT calculates the current bar length. MOVE. Suppose you have tune A, B & C in memory; if you leave the flashing cursor over 'A' and press 'M', another letter, D will appear. A small letter 'a' will also appear on the lower left of the screen. This means that a new tune 'D' has been set up, which now contains A. Press 'M' again and you have 'a a'; select 'B' and press 'M' and you have D containing A, A, B and so on - any number or combination of tunes can be merged in this way - the programme allows enough space for over 2500 notes. WRITE. If this is selected, you are asked which key you want; this is chosen by using the cursor. You are then asked if you want to reset the memory; doing so will delete ALL previous tunes from the computer's memory. You are now prompted to SET NOTE; this is done as described above. On pressing ENTER, the note scrolls to the left and you can then set another note. If in writing you make a mistake, then press key 8 - EDIT - the tune now scrolls one note to the right and you are in editing mode. When editing is complete press 1 - QUIT - to set back to writing mode. PLAY A TUNE. On pressing P, you are asked to select a key, using the cursor. You are now asked, PRACTISE or MEMORISE. If practise is selected, the stave and keyboard are displayed and the Spectrum becomes a piano keyboard. When you have finished practising, press QUIT (1). MEMORISE. If memorise is selected, you are asked if you want to RESET memory. If you reset, all previous tunes are deleted from memory, and the tune you then play becomes tune A. The stave and keyboard are now displayed and the name of the current tune. RECALL A TUNE. Pressing R from the main menu selects this option; the letters of the tunes held in memory are displayed and you can select any tune to replay, by moving the cursor. LEARNING MODE. This has two options, A & B. When A is selected, random notes appear on the right of the stave and you must press the correct key to correspond to that note. Another note will then appear and so on, pressing a wrong note will lose you one "Life". (You have three!) You are given a score according to the speed with which you react. If B is selected, you are given the option to LOAD TUNES; these are tunes that have keen previously recorded and saved. You are then asked, PROMPT. This indicates which key is to be pressed, so enabling you to learn both the keyboard and the notes on the stave! You then select the tune you require as in the recall mode. The effect is similar to mode A. SAVE, LOAD, PRINT. Pressing S selects this mode. You can now save your tunes on tape, or load them back from tape, or print the notes out on the ZX printer. WARNING: Do not press the BREAK key whilst in this mode; you will have to reload the programme if you do! We hope you enjoy SPECTUNE. We at XORSOFT aim to produce high quality programmes for your enjoyment or instruction which should give you many happy hours with your computer. XORSOFT SPECTUNE
