THE FOUR RULES by MICRO MASTER To develop high speed and accuracy in calculation and to increase levels of competence. Progress with these pr- grammes should reflect in most other areas of mathematics. PROGRAMMES - Always turn off Computer before loading type load "add" etc. Programmes run automatically. Never run programme. "add" "sub" "tables" "multi" "div" Fill the above with tape counter numbers where each programme begins. GENERAL POINTS - discourage guessing - concentration necessary throughout - computer will adjust to competence - give no assistance unless essential to motivation - first time users start at Level 1. GOLDEN RULE - A programme must always be completed. IMPORTANT - Grading tables assume pupil has initially started at Level 1 and, thereafter, has progressed in accordance with computer instructions. Grading have been researched with children trained on these same programmes. Notes For Parents Before starting Long Division pupil should attain Level 5 Addition and Level 6 Subtraction. Before starting Long Multiplication pupil should attain Level 7 Addition and Score 10 on Tables. Tables should be learned in the following order:- 2-5-10-3-11-4-6-7-8-9-12-50-20-25-15 and 'winning' at Level 3 demonstrates competence. Pupil should attempt the level at which he feels he can win. Programme Notes Subtraction:e.g. 134 decrease 3 by typing 2 -16 (not required before Level 5) Long Division: m = decimal point, h = help Long Multiplication: e.g. 9678 "units first" = x 5 first x 35 "units last" = x 5 last Complete Mastery (No further practice needed) Addition - computer instructs Subtraction - Level 9 performance 5 times consecutively Long Division - Master Score 1000+ Long Multiplication - Level 9 with no spiders missed Tables - Current score of 60 (back) GRADING TABLES FOR LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE Age Average Good V.Good Top 20% Addition 6 1 2 7 2 4 5 7 8 3 5 7 8 9 4 6 8 9 10 5 7 9 11 6 9 Subtraction 6 1 2 7 2 3 4 7 8 3 5 7 8 9 5 6 8 9 10 6 8 9 11 7 9 Long Division 8 1 2 4 6 9 3 4 5 8 10 4 6 7 9 11 6 8 9 Long Multi: 7 1 2 3 4 8 2 3 4 5 9 4 5 6 7 10 5 6 7 8 11 6 7 8 9 Multiplications Tables Testor and Learner If a pupil wins at Level 1 - Score 1; Level 2 - Score 2; Level 3 - Score 3; Level 4 - Score 4. No score for losing. For example, if a pupil does the 7 times table and wins at Level 2 then he gets a score of 2. If, at a later date, he wins at Level 3 then his score becomes 3 (not 5). Should the pupil lose at any time then the score for the table in question reverts to 0. The table below gives the total of scores for achievement, but do not include more than 3 scores of 1 when totalling.
