CP SOFTWARE, 17 Orchard Lane, Prestwood, Great Missenden, BUCKS, HP16 0NN ABOUT ZX REVERSI ZX 'REVERSI' has 11 levels of play numbered 0 to 10. Starting at level 0 the play becomed progressively stronger with each successive level. Overall response times for the first 6 levels (0 - 5) are between 1 and 60 seconds. Level 6 and above can take from 5 minutes to several hours per move. The actual response time to any one move depends not only on the level but also on the complexity of the position. The highest levels of play are suitable for extended games and for problem solving. If, by mistake or design, you try to enter an illegal move it will not be accepted. A co-ordinate system similar to that used in chess is used for entering and displaying moves. In addition to the board and pieces the display shows the players names at the head of a list of previous moves, the level of play and the number of pieces for each side. The score is updated after each move. ZX 'REVERSI' provides several features, which can be selected before a game. At the start of the game you will be asked to enter an option 0/1/2. OPTION 0 Allows the computer to play itself. This is useful for demonstration purposes. eg to see how the game is played and for tactical ideas. OPTION 1 Use this option when you want to play against the computer. OPTION 2 Allows you to play against another person. The computer acts as a referee, by not allowing illegal moves to be played, and keeps the score. THE HANDICAP SYSTEM - Either side may be handicapped by having 1-4 corners awarded against him at the start of the game. To use this system type in 'Y' to the question 'any handicaps?' Followed, when asked, by the number of corners. SET UP THE BOARD - This option allows you to set up or change the board prior to starting the game. This is useful for continuing a previous game and for giving the computer set problems. CHANGING THE DISPLAY COLOURS - If you find that the board or piece colours are not satisfactory, then they may be changed. This option occurs on exit from the 'set up the board' routine, at which time full instructions, contained within the program, will be given. RECOMMENDED MOVE - A recommended move may be optained at any time during play by entering 'R' instead of your move. This option may be especially helpful if you cannot pass and cannot find a legal move, in which case this option will indicate one possible move. TO QUIT 1. To quit a game and return to the start options, simultaneously press and hold down 'CAPS SHIFT' and the 1 key until the computer responds. 2. To quit a game and return to Basic simultaneously press and hold down the 'CAPS SHIFT' and 'BREAK' keys until the computer responds. Note this will clear the program from the computer. PLAYING INSTRUCTIONS -------------------- When correctly loaded the program auto runs. To start and play a game it is only necessary to follow the screen prompts to select from the available options. These options and how to use them are described above. The ENTER key must be pressed to complete both response and moves. Moves can be changed, before the ENTER key is pressed, by using the CAPS SHIFT and DELETE keys. A move is made simply by entering the co-ordinates of the square that you wish to place a piece on. Example, to place a piece on square C5 enter C5 and then press the enter key. BRIEF RULES FOR REVERSI ----------------------- Reversi or Orthello as it is sometimes called is played on a board of 8 x 8 squares, the same as chess and draughts. The pieces are similar to draughts pieces in shape but on one side they are black and on the other, white. At the start the board is set up with 2 white and 2 black pieces arranged diagonally on the four centre squares. The object of the game is to finish with more pieces (ie of your colour) on the board than your opponenent. A move is made by placing a piece on a square such that one or more of your opponents pieces are trapped between this and another one of your pieces which is already on the board. The trapped piece(s) is(are) then reversed (in colour) and becomes your piece(s). This trapping and reversing process applies equally to the horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines on the board and continues until neither player can move or the board is full. When making a move the piece must be placed on a vacant square adjacent to one or more of your opponents pieces such that one or more of your opponents pieces are trapped. If this is not possible then you must 'Pass' and your opponent makes another move. If the game is new to you or if you are unsure how moves are made you are recommended to load the program and select option 0 (self play) with level 0 or 1 and watch the computer play itself.
