SPEECH MARKS (pub. Sinclair Research; authors: Blackboard Software) The program is loaded in three sections: 1 Program title and logo 2. Bytes containing graphics and machine code routines 3. Main program Using the program Instructions for operating the program are given at every stage. There are three levels: 1. Sentences which contain direct speech and need only one set of speech marks. 2. Sentences which contain direct speech and one or two sets of speech marks. 3. Sentences which contain either direct or reported speech. The program gives practice in the use of inverted commas with direct speech. It contains only brief examples, being intended as an accompaniment to a lesson rather than as an alternative to one. It does not attempt to deal with the use of inverted commas as quotation marks. That will be dealt with in a later program. A list of useful books to give further instruction and practice is given below. There are thirty sentences in the vocabulary bank, ten for each level, and these are selected at random from the appropriate level. At each level, the student has to complete five sentences correctly and after level 3 has been successfully completed, there is a game to play. The student has to operate the cursor keys, 5 6 7 & 8, to position the speech marks. Key 1 enters the speech mark and key 0 indicates that the sentence is complete. The exercise routine includes moving graphics, and sound. The program gives a final score and, if the printer is attached, will print a certificate with the student's name at the end of each level. Altering the program The program gives you the option of entering your own exercise sentences. Instructions for doing this are included in the program but, as the exercise sentences are split into three lines when displayed on the screen, you may wish to check that your new sentences will (a) be acceptable for length and (b) divided neatly into three. The routine to enable you to test your sentences cannot be reached from within the program. You must BREAK, type GOTO 7000 and press ENTER. NB This test routine does not enable you to enter your sentences in the vocabulary bank. That must be done by the routine in the program - Section 3 of the menu applies. Saving the new program The routine for saving a new version is as follows: 1. Put an unused tape into your recorder and prepare for recording. 2. Type SAVE "program name" LINE 9000: SAVE "a8" CODE 64256,1281. Press RECORD on the tape recorder. 4. Press ENTER on the Spectrum. 5. Press any key and watch the screen for further instructions. 6. If you wish to check that the program has been recorded correctly: type VERIFY "": VERIFY "" CODE. Rewind the tape and press PLAY on the recorder. A similar routine is included in the program.
