NUMBER PAINTER By PSION with ASK LOADING To load Number Painter type LOAD"" and press ENTER. Then start the tape. (The Spectrum Manual gives step-by-step loading instructions.) INTRODUCTION Number Painter is a fast moving arcade game which encourages its players to develop the number skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Direct your painter in a dash around the building site, climbing up and down ladders to paint the numbers and sums to reach the TARGET number, while carefully avoiding gaps in the girders. With four different painters – from Mr. Plod to the amazing Mr. Speedy – and twelve different levels of difficulty, there is a chance for everyone. But if you are too slow in this race against time you could come to a sticky end with paint everywhere! HOW TO START Having loaded Number Painter your will be asked to select whether you wish to use the keyboard or Joystick. Type 1, 2 or 3 and then press the ENTER key. KEYBOARD Move left: O move up: A Move right: P move down: Z Paint a number: B,N,M SYMBOL SHIFT SPACE JOYSTICK movement: LEFT,RIGHT, UP,DOWN paint a number: FIRE BUTTON Both the Sinclair Interface II and the Kempston Interface are supported. LEVEL AND PAINTER. Now you must select a level of play – the higher levels have a greater number and mixture of mathematical operations (+,-,×,÷) and different ranges of values for the TARGET number. Move the box over the level numbers (using keys O and P, or the joystick) and you will see the degree of difficulty displayed. If you are new to the game, select an easier one like 1, 2 or 3 and press the ENTER key or the Fire button. Next choose your painter from Mr. Plod, Mr. Walker, Mr. Swift and Mr. Speedy. Use the A and Z keys or the joystick to move the box over each of the names then when you have decided press the ENTER key or the Fire button. Watch your painter arrive at the building site which is full of girders and ladders, and has a giant paint pot suspended from a pulley in the right hand corner. HOW TO PLAY At the top of the building site are two important numbers – the TARGET number and your TOTAL number. The object is to make the TOTAL number the same as the TARGET number by painting our the small boxes which have numbers with +,- ,× or ÷ signs on them. Each time you paint out a number the total will change. Take care to only paint those numbers which help you make the TOTAL equal to the TARGET number. You have three painters in the bottom left hand corner, and once you have some idea of how to reach the TARGET number, press the SPACE key or Fire button to start. Direct your painter round the site with the keyboard or joystick controls. When he arrives at a number that you want him to paint press any of the following keys: B, N, M, SYMBOL SHIFT, SPACE or the Fire button. If a painter tries to paint a number that will make his TOTAL less that 0 or greater than 9999m the game will stop and a message will be displayed. Press the SPACE key or Fire button to continue. Similarly when painting a division number, the painter should choose one which divides into the TOTAL exactly. If he doesn't then the game stops and the message "NOT A FACTOR" will appear- press SPACE or the Fire button to continue. At the higher levels you must watch out for holes in the girders! If the painter falls into one his work gets mixed up and the TOTAL changes. When the painter succeeds in making the TOTAL equal to the TARGET then he jumps for joy and dashes off to reappear in the home square on the bottom right of the screen. After all three painters have had a turn, the scene changes again. If two or three painters were successful then you will go on to the next level. If only one painter succeeded, you stay on the same level, otherwise you go down a level. You are taken to the next building sire automatically. FLOODS Plan the painter's work carefully before he starts to paint. If he takes too long the bucket of paint on the right hand side of the screen will reach the top, tip over and flood the site with paint. Press the SPACE key or the Fire button to continue with your next painter. HELP If you are having difficulties, you can always press CAPS SHIFT and SPACE to take you back to the choice of levels for you to try again. If you want to re-select the keyboard or joystick, press CAPS SHIFT and 1, and this will take you right back to the start. SELF DEMONSTRATION If you do not make a selection from any of the menus, after two minutes the program will go into a self demonstration. EDUCATIONAL NOTES Most players will arrive at NUMBER PAINTER with some skills in simple mental arithmetic. This game encourages them to build on these skills in order to succeed. Many vital mathematical concepts are involved and constantly reinforced: 1. The relationship between addition and subtraction. 2. The relationship between multiplication and division. 3. That repeated addition is a way of solving a multiplication sum, though inefficient. 4. That, similarly, repeated subtraction is a possible but inefficient way of doing divisions. Planning skills are also required and this is best done before the game starts. Successful players will complete a range of mental activities before they begin each new game. --------------------------------------------------------- Psion software cassettes are manufactured by a fully automated process under the strictest quality control.
