INSTRUCTIONS 1. INTRODUCTION You will be asked at the start to choose your DIFFICULTY LEVEL ...This determines how much money you will be given to buy: SPEAKEASIES DISTILLERIES CASINOS BROTHELS GANGSTERS You will find that income from illegal activities is necessary to pay gangsters' wages, bribes, fines... etc, and that you assets and gang will be taken over if you run out of money. 2. OBJECTIVE The Objective of the game is to take over the City from the other gang leaders...by hook or by crook! 3. DESCRIPTION OF GAME STAGE 1. You are shown a table of your rivals' and your own assets. You may buy new assets at any time. More asets mean more income. Next you are shown your rivals' and your own gang sizes an attributes. GANG MORALE is key: it starts at 20 for each gang, but varies according to the amount and success of illegal activity engaged in: if a gang's morale reaches zero it drops out of the game and its assets revert to you. If your morale drops to zero you lose the game. The PROTECTION FACTOR is a percentage: it shows the percent of your total protection (gang size x average morale) which protects your person - the remainder protects your assets. The higher your PROTECTION FACTOR, the less likely you are to be murdered but, conversely, the more likely you are to have your assets raided. The same applies, of course, to your rivals' protection factors. You will find that your rivals will adjust their PROTECTION FACTORS in response to your behaviour; if you keep trying to murder them, they will increase their Personal Protection, leaving their assets less well defended. STAGE 2 Leading a gang is a dangerous business! The meters on either side of the screen show the risk of arrest for yourself and your gangsters. They increase more rapidly the more illegal activites you engage in, and if they reach maximum levels you, or a member of your gang will be arrested. You can keep down the risk of arrest by bribing (Option 1) In Option 2, you can shop one of your rivals, but be careful...They're a vengeful lot!!! STAGE 3 In this stage you organise raids on rivals' Speakeasies, Distilleries, Casinos and Brothels. You are shown a map of the City, and you must select a target. The Coloured squares are your rivals' assets...yours ae white - BLUE: D = DISTILLERY OF GANG 1. RED: S = SPEAKEASY OF GANG 2. MAGENTA: B = BROTHEL OF GANG 3. GREEN: C = CASINO OF GANG 4. Each gang has a hidden arms cache concealed in one of its assets. If you find the hidden location you will be able to keep the arms, thereby increasing your gangsters' morale and causing your rivals to buy more arms to rearm his gangsters. If you don't find the location of the arms cache, the computer will tell you how far away it is from the asset you have selected as target. This way you can build up a gradual picture of the hidden location, which can be deduced after several raids on the same gang's assets. You must then enter the number of gangsters to make the raid and will be given a Damage Report. However, remember that if your gangsters are out on a raid, they cannot protect you or your own assets, so that if you assign too many gangsters to the raid your Protection Factor will be temporarily overridden. STAGE 4 This options enables you to take out contracts on your rivals. The probability of success is a function of the target's Personal Protection and the amount of money spent on the contract. If the murder attempt is a success you will inherit all the dead gangster's assets. If it fails, there is a danger that a contract will be taken out on you!!! STAGE 5 You are given an Income and Expenditure Summary, a League Table, and an Intelligence Report which alerts you to your rivals' activities. YOU HAVE NOW COMPLETED ONE MONTH, AND, AFTER A CALENDAR UPDATE WILL GO BACK TO STAGE 1. 4. HINTS ON PLAY To win you must be ruthless. Any hesitation will result in your rivals attacking you and your gang deserting you. You will need to make raids on your rivals' assets or your gang will lose their morale. Casinos have a fluctuating income, whereas the other businesses generate a steady income. Before shopping your rival you will need to ensure that he does not have the resources to retaliate.
