Running Instructions for Car Journey Spectrum 48K In Car Journey you are the owner of a delivery service, delivering parcels and packages throughout the country. The aim of the delivery service is to make money. The more contracts you can deliver on time the more money you will make. Before you try to run the delivery service you can go to the driving school. The driving school (levels one and two) allows you to drive each of the four vehicles around the road network of Britain, discovering how quickly you can get from town to town and how efficiently you can drive each vehicle. To help you use the program, place the keyboard overlay over the top row of keys on your ZX Spectrum. This will help you to identify which keys to press. How to load this program ------------------------ You will need: 1 A Sinclair 48K Spectrum 2 A cassette recorder 3 A T.V. set Setting up your equipment Connect your Spectrum, cassette recorder, and T.V. set as instructed in your Spectrum manual. If the program does not load, the volume control on your cassette may need to be adjusted to a lower or higher level - do this, then repeat the above process. 1 Selecting the level The program has four levels: Level 1 Driving school without road hazards Level 2 Driving school with road hazards Level 3 Delivery service without road hazards Level 4 Delivery service with road hazards You should select the level you want by pressing [SPACE] to highlight the required level. Press [ENTER] to continue when you have selected the level. 2 Choosing your home town You will now be asked to choose your home town. Naturally, your home town is the town where your journey begins. When you are playing the Delivery Service you will be charged for accommodation for every night when you are not in your home town. Press [SPACE] to cycle through the towns until the home town of your choice is highlighted. Now press [ENTER] to continue. 3 Choosing a vehicle There are four vehicles you can choose to drive. Each vehicle has different characteristics. Press [SPACE] to select which of the four vehicles you wish to use and then press [ENTER] to confirm the booking. The smaller vehicles travel faster and cost less to hire for the day (when you are playing Delivery Service) but do not carry as many packages. In addition, each vehicle has a fuel tank with a different capacity. The fuel consumption at various speeds for each vehicle is shown on the histogram. In general, the larger the vehicle, the more expensive it is to run. When you have selected a vehicle you are ready to start a journey. Press [1] to see the road map. Although it is not possible to change your vehicle during a journey you can select another vehicle as soon as you arrive in a new town. Press [8] to change your present vehicle and then select the one you wish to drive, by pressing [SPACE], before confirming the booking with [ENTER]. Remember, you can only change your vehicle when you are in a town. [There is no section 4 in the instructions] 5 Making a journey If you do not already have the map on the screen, press [1] to display it. Pressing [SPACE] will highlight each of the possible roads from your home town in turn. Press [ENTER] when the road you wish to take has been highlighted. (The larger the vehicle the more a full tank will cost). Whenever you run out of petrol you can press [SPACE] to refill. When you have filled up with petrol your journey can begin. Press [2] to increase your speed. Each time this key is pressed your speed will increase by 5 km/h. Pressing [3] will decrease your speed by 5 km/h each time. The speed of your vehicle will be shown by the speedometer on the left of the screen. Should you exceed the speed limit (110 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on other roads) then you may be stopped by the police. If you are stopped you will need to press [SPACE], after the police message has appeared, before resuming your journey. When you arrive in the city you can either change vehicle (by pressing [8]), or see a fuel consumption chart for your vehicle (by pressing [5]). For levels 3 and 4 you are told how much money you have in addition to the distance travelled and fuel used. Press [6] to see a progress chart, and then [1] to return to the map. In levels 3 and 4 the progress chart is displayed whenever you pay for petrol, deliver or lose contracts, or when you make an overnight stop at the end of the day (you will be forced to stop at 19:00 hrs every night for an overnight stop - the journey can begin again at 07:00 hrs the next morning). Bonuses and money you receive for delivering contracts are added to your account. Money you spend on petrol, fines, overnight stops, repairs, or penalties for not delivering contracts are taken away from your account.
