(instr front) THE FURY INTRODUCTION Fasten your safety harness for the space age Demolition Derby. Played on a track (called The Ring) floating in space with curves which let you get up to incredible speeds and experience vivid sensations. The Fury is a real electronic game - fast and addictive - which will involve you in a battle against daredevil, wily victors from all the known worlds. Your objective is simple - to win at all costs. USER INSTRUCTIONS FOR FURY METHOD OF ENTERING COMMANDS The system for entering commands uses a cross or a floating cursor which can be moved around a menu using the cursor keys or a joystick. If it is possible to make a selection the word SET will appear in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Press FIRE to select this option. You can exit from the menu pages by means of the following: 1. By selecting an option which has been set. 2. By moving the cross towards the lower left hand corner of the games screen and pressing FIRE. 3. By selecting the arrow icons to leaf through the help pages. MAIN MENU 1. Start of a new game. You have just started your first race. 2. Enter your name. Type in your name then hit the ENTER or RETURN key. The DELETE key can be used in the normal fashion. MENU OPTIONS Select joystick or keyboard. The race track can be selected as follows: FIXED - no up or down movement during the race or FLOATING - the ability to move your vehicle up or down. GAMES MENU This menu also provides vital information on the game's status and about the next race, including: TYPE OF RACE (see RACES) YOUR BOUNTY - the price on your head which tells you your STATUS and which is also used to determine your POSITION AMONGST THE DRIVERS. DRIVERS DESTROYED - the total number of adversaries you have killed. DATA ABOUT THE RACE - what you have to do to pass on to the next race. E.g. DO FOUR LAPS OF THE TRACK IN 300IS (IS = Intergalactic Second) MONEY - (appearing in the upper right hand corner of the screen). The total amount of Galactic Groats in your possession. The options are as follows:- RACE - your position on the track for the next race, in the car you currently own. NEW CARS - used to buy a new car. Each appears on the screen with its price in Galactic Groats. To buy a new car all you have to do is select the model of your choice and it will belong to you providing, of course, that you have the necessary money. There are enormous variations in price and performance from one car to the other. At the start of the game you own an AVENGER (see RACING CARS). EQUIPMENT - the following items appear on the menu: EJECTOR SEAT MISSILES LARGE FLAME-THROWER MACHINE GUNS SMALL FLAME-THROWER FUEL REPAIRS You can see your current status beside each item (either the quantity or the word SET, showing that you are already in possession of that item) as well as the item's unit price. To select an item, take your cursor over to it and press FIRE. The MONEY will be automatically deducted from your account. It is possible to repeat this process on certain items, for example to strengthen your missile status. NOTE: Weapons are only available for the KILLER RACES. You cannot access this menu without a car. DRIVERS - this lets you know about the participants in the next race. You can see the: Name: of the driver, going from first to last Bounty: the price on the head of that driver Scanner: the letter used to identify his car on the Identification: TRACK SCAANNER GAME CONTROLS (IMPORTANT - the height to which your car can move upwards is determined by your speed). FIRE - to operate the MACHINE GUNS, MISSILES and FLAME-THROWERS. see WEAPONS SYSTEMS for more detailed information. H - to STOP the game. SPACE BAR - to shift a tracking cross centred on your car. DRIVER (on foot) - if you find yourself on the track without a car (a very unpleasant situation), waggle the joystick from right to left (or press the cursor keys) as quickly as possible (and run for the finishing line as fast as your legs can take you!!). THE FURY If you enter into the fourth dimension, called The Fury, there is no advice one can give you. Seek to understand. The Fury has extraordinary powers. TYPES OF RACES 1. AGAINST THE CLOCK: a race against the clock. If you do not finish or succeed in bettering the qualifying time you are eliminated from the race. If you succeed in destroying cars belonging to your enemies your bounty will increase and their's will fall. The more the price on their heads is raised the more money you will win. Sums of money are also distributed as prizes depending on the position you finish the race in. 2. DEMOLITION DERBY: a race in which you wipe out anything you can reach. Making use of all the weapons you can buy you must destroy your CONTINGENT of Noads in order to survive. Show no pity. 3. TAG RACE: a car is chosen at random and becomes "IT". To hand over its tag it must touch another car, which in turn becomes "IT". The tagged car is represented by a cross. Any tagged car is continually damaged. If the tagged car is destroyed or leaves the race a new car is chosen is chosen and becomes "IT". NOTE: in some races the Seek and Destroy tracker cross should be avoided - or watch out!! RACE DISPLAY A = TRACK SCANNER - cause a portion of the track in front or behind you to be displayed. You car appears on the screen as a cross. Your adversaries' cars are displayed by their scanner identification letter. B = POSITIONS - shows the position of the vehicles in first, second and third place. Your car is represented by a small cross. C = MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY - this screen shows the following: Against the Clock/Tag Demolition Derby 1. Your position in the race The number of Noads you have killed 2. Your speed Your speed 3. Your fuel level Your fuel level 4. The number of laps remaining (X10) Ammunition left (cartridges X 10) 5. The number of laps remaining (X1) Ammunition left (cartridges X1) 6. Your time (in IS) Your Time (in IS) D = DAMAGE DISPLAY - a graphics display of the damage inflicted on your car. Each car has a matrix of shields. When this is weak the box turns red. SEEK AND DESTROY (SD) The judges have a very low opinion of drivers whose driving is monotonous (its ver bad for the listener ratings). If they want they can pursue the indicted driver with the SD cross and destroy him. If they round on you, try to impress them. TRACK WARNING LIGHTS (on the Ring itself) Red - being tracked by the SD Blue - race over Pink - car suffering damage Green - one lap completed White - race against the clock/tag race over. WEAPONS SYSTEMS Sartain Industries A company set up in 2011. Sartain is the principal supplier of light arms to all the armed forces in the major countries throughout Sol. When weapons became legal in the Rings Sartain entered the competitive market for destroying Noads and today they still produce equipment of the highest quality. Flame-throwers There are two types, with a range of 8m and 70m and are ideal for direct combat with Noads. However, the fuel these weapons require comes directly from the car's tank, which can be very dangerous. Flames are projected by exerting a continuous pressure on the button marked FIRE. Semi-guided missiles Much appreciated by the majority of drivers, although expensive these missiles constitute the surest form of attack. They have a unique warhead and are the "fire and forget" type. One single missile can easily destroy four or five Noads at a time. Method of usage: 1. Exert a continuous pressure on the fire button to launch one or both missiles. 2. Position your vehicle behind the target to be hit. 3. Press the fire button again to launch the missiles. 4. It is possible to aim when launching the missiles by making an upward or downward movement whilst firing. Machine guns The cars are fitted with achine guns as standard but the ammunition (they hold eight cartridges) usually has to purchased in five round magazines. Machine guns are fired by rapid pressure on the FIRE button. Ejector seat It is possible to buy and fit ejector seats to most of the vehicles. The Automatic Ejection System is triggered when the car runs out of fuel or if the protective shield drops. Unfortunately the operating system remains in the car and therefore the device cannot be reused. It has been suggested that this major design fault was in face intentional on the part of Sartain to ensure repeat sales of this costly device. BRIEF HISTORY THE MOON'S MOON 1996 - It was in 1996 that the first official Ring Race took place. It took eight years to construct the Ring which is located in the Arizona desert and is 20km in diameter and 60km long. The race itself took place over two weeks, with more than 1,000 drivers taking part in the competition. The death rate was high, with 438 drivers losing their lives and 122 being injured. The cars taking part in the competition had combustion engines running on petrol and could reach speeds of 200kmh. There were only three drivers left for the last race in that inaugural year: Seya Alkli, Jardinare and Leal Lamier (father of the now famous Rason Lamier). Leal's car exploded three seconds after the race started. It was a close battle for the remaining 12 laps of the track but Seya triumphed, winning by 0.39 seconds. That was how the first year of the Ring Race finished. 2001 - The Ring Race had become a major event. Rings sprang up all over Raal, then called "Earth", with races financed by "Network", the main television station, which broadcast the competitions practically non-stop. These events even eclipsed the discovery of the year, a black rock found on the Moon. The answer given by Dr. Logon (Mr Network) when asked about the Ring Races was: "Oh, it lets us keep the population rate down to an acceptable level". 2005 - The first inertail power cars made their appearance. Using a liquid nitrogen based fuel these vehicles were able to reach speeds in excess of 320kmh. Unfortunately, this fuel provided to be particularly unstable and even the lightest blow to the vehicle could cause an explosion. 2006 - To respond to the demands created by the new engines it was necessary to construct new Rings. Dr Logon, a multi-billionaire, ordered a new Ring to be constructed in orbit around Raal's moon. 2009 - The Moon Ring was finished and measured 100km in diameter and was over 300km long. The first race was scheduled for 2010. The television station commissioned to broadcast the Race of the Century was Network. 2010 - The race began at the start of the year. 53 drivers died in its first leg. These deaths were blamed on the new fuel. The race went on throughout the year and was won by one of Logon's numerous drivers, Catherine Bach. There were also rumours about the reappearance of the black rock which this time was orbiting around Solis (Jupiter). However, everyone was too occupied by the race to be interested in the black rock and it disappeared without trace. 2012 - Races took place and were broadcast regularly, but the public's interest dropped off little by little until it reached a minimum. (instr back) 2018 - When the public's interest in the main races had fallen away considerably a strange event was observed. In the course of a routine race on the lunar Ring, now called the Moon's Moon, one of the drivers was holding his vehicle very close to the top of the Ring. He was in last place, pushing his car to its maximum, when it suddenly shattered into a million pieces and disappeared from the track. Five other drivers had accidents whilst watching this spectacle. Later it was discovered that the driver in question was Viktor Anome. No on has seen him again. The primary effect of this incident was to raise the popularity curve in Ring Races. 2019 - To ensure the Ring Races retained their popularity and to have them mentioned in the pages of history, Logon presented plans for the construction of an artificial planet called Devs in orbit around Jupiter. This planet was to have 12 gigantic Rings around it and the whole thing, called "Dream's Frontier" would become the Tenth Wonder of the Universe. 2027 - Devs was completed and in the course of the following years the 12 Rings of Devs became the main attraction on Sol. 2035 - Thanks to Devs it was now certain that the Ring Races would go down in history. Not an hour passed by without trials taking place on one of Devs' numerous Rings - and they were all broadcast by Network, making Logon the richest man of all time. 2040 - The rules of the Ring Races were changed for the first time. With drivers becoming more and more experienced, horrific accidents were rarer, which led to the creation of special races during which each driver did a solo run against the clock. Their mission was to destroy a preset number of cars controlled by androids. The difference was that drivers could fit their vehicle with all the weapons they could buy and install. 2041 - Network rapidly discovered that the destruction of androids was becoming less popular with the public. So the androids were replaced with novice drivers wanting to become Ring Race Pilots. If they survived a killer race they became fully fledged drivers. Those representing this cannon fodder were called NO,DS and were the lowest form of life. 2045 - Since the disappearance of Viktor Anome hundreds of drivers have disappeared from the track in an inexplicable manner. On June 18th, 1945, Reason Lamier, the Ring Races' undisputed leader launched his car down the track and the next moment vanished, 80 billion people held their breath - but eight seconds later Reason's car reappeared - 430km from the spot where he disappeared. He won the race with ease, Reason then climbed out of the car, uttered these now immortal words "It's The Fury" to the inhabitants of Sol who were watchig him and lost consciousness. Reason regained consciousness five years later and although he still takes part in the races, he remains silent. Nowadays drivers reach The Fury repeatedly during competitions but none has ever revealed what lies beyond the barrier. RACING CARS It is much easier to take part in a Ring Race if you choose a car to suit your financial resources. Below you will find vital information on the cars available: THE AVENGER, 2030-2048 Price - 450g Maximum speed - 240kmh Acceleration - poor Brakes - very poor Armaments capacity - 2 Protective shields - very weak Fuel consumption - very poor Built by Millard, the Avenger is the least expensive Ring car. Its production began at the end of the 2030s and it has been an enormous success. In fact this car gives you access to an introduction to racing without too heavy an outlay. However it is worth noting that after the Avenger's appearance on the circuits the death rate on the Rings went up by 40%. Because of the old fashioned design of its chassis it is impossible to house missiles inside the Avenger. HUNTER, 2040-2078 Price - 650g Maximum speed - 300kmh Acceleration - poor Brakes - poor Armaments capacity - 6 Protective shields - poor Fuel consumption - very poor Another Millard car built to replace the Avenger but with very slight improvements. This car was never a great success. In fact it has a large body and is heavy, difficult to steer and is fitted with a small engine. REVENGER, 2045 Price - 725g Maximum speed - 300kmh Acceleration - average Brakes - average Armaments capacity - 10 Protective shields - very poor Fuel consumption - poor The Avenger MK II, which has gained great success. Maximum speed was increased to 300kmh and acceleration and braking improved, all of which entailed an increase in price. The main disadvantage of this new version is that it is fitted with the same low powered protective shield generator as the first Avenger. HARLET, 2035-2056 Price - 800g Maximum speed - 320kmh Acceleration - good Brakes - fair Armaments capacity - 10 Protective shields - good Fuel consumption - extremely poor Nueva's second and last attempt. The designers and project engineers brought all their efforts to bear on the engine. The Roche Corporation sued them, claiming that the engine was a copy of their very popular GZ-4000. Roche lost their case and the Hurlant was a great success, with only its fuel consumption leaving something to be desired. WASTER, 2040-2049 Price - 1000g Maximum speed - 240kmh Acceleration - very poor Brakes - very poor Armaments capacity - 50 Protective shields - excellent Fuel consumption - excellent This vehicle is the first one constructed purely for the destruction of Noads. Built by Sandor, it benefitted from a very high weapons capacity and very low fuel consumption (giving good use of flame throwers), but the Waster is a heavy, slow car. ROCHE, 2055 In 2055 the enormous Roche Corporation, famous for their space machine engines, produced three cars: Roche 1000 - 3500g, Roche 1250 - 5600g, Roche 1300 - 8350g Although they are good cars, the drivers' verdict was that Roche could have done better. THE ANOME, 2070-2071 Price - 1400g Maximum speed - 450kmh Acceleration - excellent Brakes - excellent Armaments capacity - 30 Protective shields - excellent Fuel consumption - excellent Produced by Roche and bearing the name of the first driver to disappear into The Fury. The Anome is a very expensive limited edition. SPLAT Guide our intrepid hero, Ziggy, around the Splat Map that he has suddenly found himself transported into. His only hope is to reach the teleport gate on level 7 and transport home. Easy you might think, but you would be wrong. Whilst trying to reach the gate, you must avoid drowning (You cannot swim!) and being impaled on drawing pins that someone has carelessly left lying about. The only good thing about the splat map is that Ziggy can indulge in his favourite pastime, eating. There is plenty of grass spread around the splat map but be careful of the 'Unstable Suff' which is, well unstable. To complete a level, you have to survive for a certain length of time so don't get splatted. On top of all this, the map moves around randomly and you must avoid the brick walls that surround you. If you touch the wall then, you've guessed it, SPLAT! Imagine what fun it would be to explore - to boldly go, where no boldly goer had boldly gone before - unless they happened to live there. Latest research from the Institute of Advanced Research (I.A.R.) indicated (...loaded yet???) that there are quite a lot of planets with things living on them. Some of these things are pretty intelligent like us really. (God, this is awful!). Other of these things are really stupid, like whelks, for example. Anyway, to cut a long story short, you have been selected to explore the Universe, boldly seeking out strange and exciting new worlds. If you find any, your instructions are quite clear. BLAST THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THEM!!!!!! As you set off in your remarkably fast and powerful spacecraft - your mind is tingling with excitement. Things like missiles, rotate motors, speed up thrusts (I ask you ...is this likely!) shields and - yep - extra lives. Frantically, you try to capture them. But what's this!!! (...Again?). Someone else is also trying to grab the goodies. His shield is impervious to your laser bolts. Oh No!! And what's this? It's an enormous and highly populated planet... WHAM!!! BLAM!!! KERPOW!!! VIXEN INTRODUCTION The Planet Granath has been under siege for as long as the sky has met with the horizon and for as long as the mountains have rolled into the distance. For Granath, a world in a parallel universe many eons away, has been at the mercy of the dinosaurs. For millions of years they roamed the planet's surface and its massive underground caves in search of their prey. They have destroyed all but a few of the mammals, and all of the humans. Or have they? For a powerful lone female figure still stalks and battles with the reptiles. The cataclysmic catastrophe that hit the scalled beasts on Earth many millions of years ago has not happened here. It is a different world - very different. Vixen, found abandoned as a child and raised by the wily foxes, has magic powers bestowed on her by the Fox Sages. With her ability to metamorphosize into a fox and her Magic Whip in hand, she is fierce, brave and a match for any of her foes. SCREEN DISPLAY Top centre number of lives remaining. Bottom centre number of mega gems held. Left panel timer. Right panel score. The main levels above the ground are played as a woman. If Vixen survives a level AND accumulates enough Fox Time, she changes into a Fox and must try to complete a level underground. COMPLETING LEVELS ABOVE GROUND At the beginning of each level the timer panel will display the number of seconds you have to complete that level. Any time remaining at the end of a successful level will be converted into score. Trying to prevent Vixen from completing each level are the evil mutant dinosaurs. Determined to destroy her, they will crawl, jump or fly at our fearless heroine. If they touch Vixen she loses one of her magic lives. The mutant nasties may be avoided or kelled by using the whip. Some require more that one hit to be killed, so be warned! If Vixen falls into a hole, she loses one life. If Vixen runs out of time, she loses one life and the timer is reset. OBJECTS ABOVE GROUND There are various useful objects disguised on each level. To reveal an object, whip its hiding place. To collect a revealed object, simply move over it. Gems - score extra points. FOX TIME As you collect Fox Time the fox's head moves right on the display panel. If you move the head to its maximum setting and you manage to complete the level, Vixen will metamorphosize into a fox and enter an underground level. Extra Lives - added to display. Extra Time - more time to complete level added to display. Mystery Objects - to be discovered. COMPLETING FOX LEVELS The fox level is a bonus collection level. There are no dinosaurs underground. Once the level is started, the fox timer counts down. If it reaches zero before you complete a level you lose a life. Any fox time remaining at the end of a successful level is converted into score. If the fox falls into a hole, you lose a life and that fox level is terminated. OBJECTS BELOW GROUND To collect an object move over it, then press fire. Gems - score extra points. Mega Whips - this whip will kill all nasties with one hit. If Vixen is carrying the Mega Whip it will be displayed on the top of the screen. If you lose a life on any level you also lose the Mega Whip. Mega Gems - These are only found underground. If you pick up a Mega Gem it will be displayed on the top panel. Mega Gems increase your scoring potential on the surface levels. If you lose a life on any level you also lose all your Mega Gems.
