Spectrum Easter eggs

Easter egg This is an archive of Easter eggs in Sinclair Spectrum games and utilities. It includes hidden features, secret messages, and strange game behaviour.

There are now separate pages for hidden content in loading screens, Spectrum hardware, Stuart Middleton, and Design Design Software.

Note: Messages spelled out in maps are only included when they are inaccessible or hard to find, part of a game widely regarded as a classic, or especially funny or notable. There would otherwise be too many to list!

Blob the Cop

There is a hidden message in the code:

This is a hidden message that isn't displayed in the game If you are reading this then you are obviously hacking the code apart. God knows why though... Oh if you are either Ian or Stingray then HI! (Thought Id find you two noseing about in here! Theres a bit of a story attached to this little gamette... Ages ago when I got my lovely PDS (Programmers Development System) I started writing this just to see what it could do. In a couple of days this monstrosity had been born, under the working title of PLURPS! I stuffed it away in a dark little corner of my hard disk for a while and little morewas ever seen of it. It didnt have a name or a plot. But at the show we decided to offer it to the mags, they all said they had loads of stuff so didnt want it. Then suddenly out of the blue SU phoned and said they were interested so I then HAD to finish it. After many long lunchtimes thought, I came up with the name BLOBOCOP , intending the name to be a parody of OCEANS ROBOCOP. I had never actually seen the game and have been told that this bears quite a resembelance to ROBOCOP. Well, we send the completed master off to SU who saw fit to loose it. The replacement met the same horrible fate. THEN on the 23rd of December, having just got back from Southamton to collect JABBAs new D50 synth (What a poser huh) I made a spectacular entrance to the pre xmas doo drinkies to the shouts of 'youre in deep trub...' 'OCEAN are going to SUE...' etc etc... After a severe tongue lashing I was asked to interrupt my xmas break and make the grueling journey from Cheshire to Hampshire on the 28Th 'just to fix the bits' Well, bang go my heavy boozing sessions!! Ah well it makes a nice rest from being jumped on day and night by thousands of delinquent second generation cousens!! Ah well, ya can always dream... Hope you have all had a smashing Xmas and a GREAT new year. I'm back off to Cheshire in a few hours to re-join the merriment!!! See ya all.... Andy (&e7)

The Boggit

Type WHY for the message: "FORTY TWO!" (a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

Bomb Jack II

There is a hidden message in the code: **** 20/1/87 A.WILLIAMS ****.

Booty

If you load the game with a Currah Microspeech unit attached, you get to play a hidden diving subgame where you must catch 20 goldfish without running out of air or touching any other creature. You can also access this subgame by poking 52798,58 on the controls menu.

screenshot

Bounder

Brickwork on some levels spells out words and initials. Level 1 has HI!; 2 has SH, MD, CK, PMH (for developers Shaun Hollingworth, Marco Duroe, Chris Kerry, and Peter Harrap) and OH!; 4 has ACE; 5 has COOL, DIE, and something vertical that looks like HKIGGLES; 6 has HA!; 7 has ZOO; and 10 has AW and (on the final bonus screen) OK!.
Skarpo has annotated Ladderman's map (940 KB) to highlight possible text (also noticed by Jim Langmead).

screenshot

Cavelon

Type JSWILLY during a game. A message appears on the screen: HI CHRIS WHAT DO YOU WANT..... You can now teleport to any level by pressing keys 1 to 6. "Chris" probably refers to Christian Urquhart, who wrote the game.

Chaos

The game contains default names for the eight wizards (JULIANLL, GANDALFRT, GREATFOGEY, DYERATI, GOWIN, MERLIN, GILLIAN RANE, SIMONO ZARK) which are overwritten when players choose their own names and thus never used; and there is a symbol table in the code that includes the label FUCK.

According to one transcription of the instructions, "Chaos is actually an unfinished game. Games Workshop released it without Julian's knowledge, and as such there is the odd bug that crops up. Further clues to this include the fact that if you hack into the program, there are a few sprites not used in the game, and the names of a few spells that are never shown." Does anyone know more about this?

Chronos

See also hidden content in loading screens.

If you fire and move the Kempston joystick around, the eyes in the title screen light up, the hidden mouth appears, and the high score table is replaced with an alternate version:

AGENT X What the mags said
'I have seen it all, now I can die'
Computer Weekly
'Globber, slobber, burp.' C&VG
'How did this get in here'? BMX Review
But seriously thanks to Crash,

The Colour of Magic (Alternative Software)

There is a 50% chance that the BASIC loader will display this message: dedicated to the COMMUNARDS and all our friends. You can force this to happen by typing RANDOMIZE 6666 before loading the game.

The loader also contains the text: Also dedicated to M.K. Piranha won't be the same without you!

screenshot

In part three, you can get some special responses involving the authors' names.

Type FERGUS for the message: Who?

Type IMAGINE FERGUS for the message: There was a brief shimmering, and Fergus appeared. He stood for a moment, rather surprised. Then, pausing only to light a cigarette, he walked away to find a fast food establishment.

Type IMAGINE JUDITH for the message: Judith appeared. "Glad to see you got rid of the iconograph." she said, and walked away.

Type IMAGINE COLIN for the message: Colin appeared. "Thanks!" he grinned. "You just got me out of a really boring bit of college." He strode convincingly away.

Type IMAGINE TERRY for the message: Terry Pratchett appeared. "Don't look at me!" he said, "I've got enough problems playing 'Hitch-hikers'." He turned and set off to find some tea. (This is a reference to Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy adventure game.)

The phrase time to go away (apparently a Human League reference) is also in the table of high score responses, but it doesn't seem to be linked to any input.

Deja Vu The Remix

This improved version of Deja Vu has all of the same high-score messages and one more: entering leanne go (presumably the start of a longer name, but only the first few characters are compared) produces the message HIYA LEANNE!.

On the title menu, pressing the keys STROP at the same time displays a drawing of "Rachel from Emmerdale Farm?" and plays one of the sample tunes from The Music Box. This only works before the game has been played, because that part of memory is later used as a cache area.

According to author Andrew Daly, "The lady in question was Leanne and the quote relates to a dark night back in 1990 which involved a rear-wheel-drive elderly Ford Capri, some dark country lanes, a ditch and having her father (not my biggest fan — and a farmer to boot) tow us out of a ditch in his tractor. Let's just say the gods were not smiling that night!"

screenshot

Down to Earth

The game contains a hidden Teletext-style magazine called Orifice, inspired by Spectacle in Dark Star. Author Darren Byford explains, "Orifice occupies the game's backscreen memory on load-up and so it gets deleted when the game is run. To access it, you have to hold down the keys 12345 while the game is loading. The first thing the game does is to check for these keys being pressed." Here is the text from Orifice. Note that "beer mat" is a slang term for the original 48K Spectrum.

I'd like a screenshot for this, but my PC keyboard doesn't recognise the key combination.

Egghead 4

There is a hidden message in the code:

HELLO HACKER. THIS IS THE 24 x 23 DUMMY SCREEN BUFFER. WERE YOU EXPECTING TO FIND A SECRET MESSAGE OR SOMETHING? MAYBE A HIDDEN GAME? OR SOME PICTURES OF NAKED LADIES FONDLING RUBBER KEYBOARDS? TRY ONE OF MY OTHER GAMES THEN - THOSE HAVE LOTS OF EASTER EGGS. THE ONLY EGG IN THIS IS THE MAIN CHARACTER HIMSELF. SOZ AND ALL THAT.

Fantasy World Dizzy

Press Fire when standing in front of the picture at the top of the stairs just above the dungeon. You will see the loading screen from Treasure Island Dizzy, the preceding game in the series, and an explanatory note about your "previous adventure". This only works with the 128K version.

screenshot

After you have spoken to Dozy, try speaking to him again. You kick his chair but he doesn't wake up. Keep doing this: the fourth time you try it, you kick him into the water and he floats away. This serves no purpose in the game!

screenshot

Fat Worm Blows a Sparky

Pausing the game (H key) displays an animated bouncing ball routine.

screenshot

Gauntlet III

There is a hidden message in the code: For God so loved the world that he gave his one & only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Grange Hill

"Gravy" on comp.sys.sinclair reports, "There's a scene in the game where someone offers you some drugs. If you accept them, it spits out a torrid tale of initial fun followed by addiction and eventual death; but, in the development version, accepting the drugs gave the player the ability to fly between locations and beat the game in a jiffy."

Hacker II: The Doomsday Papers

When logging on, you can enter the following names for hidden messages.

HIPPY

YASHAR.

HeroQuest

In the full game, the barbarian is called Sigmar, the dwarf Grugni, the elf Ladril, and the wizard Zoltan. In the demo version distributed with Crash issue 88, however, they have silly temporary names: the barbarian is Bogrol (bog roll?), the dwarf Logrol, the elf Pigrol, and the wizard Wifwaf.

screenshot

Incredible Shrinking Fireman

Robert Baker says, "There were officially something like 41 rooms, but there were more objects listed within the code than were actually visible in the game, so as an experiment I teleported myself to room 42. (I think I did so by poking using my Multiface, and then losing a life.) I found to my surprise that room 42 actually existed and contained one of the missing objects! One could go left into the rightmost normally-accessible room, but of course this was a one-way link."

Jack the Nipper II: Coconut Capers

At the top of the map, there is a treetop screen with a boulder, a bird, and a swinging rope. If you swing on the rope and jump off the right-hand side of the screen, you will fall through a screen that contains a flying elephant and wooden platforms that spell the word HI.

screenshot

Near the middle of the map, there is a bridge patrolled by a savage and an elephant. If you jump from the branches at the top, you will discover four flying elephants in the sky above.

screenshot

Jet Set Willy

At least two of the Jet Set Willy II enemy sprites are also present in the original Jet Set Willy, even though they are not used. The wheeled base starts at memory address 45312 and the periscope at 44440.

Lunaris

There is a hidden message in the code: Ooh Lordy, it's the hidden message. Let's see if the author stuck anything rude in this bit. Hmmm let's see, the obligatory cronosoft.co.uk plug... some nonsense about drinking lots of tea... a crap joke... No, it's clean. Hey, where'd the crap joke go?

Maria vs. Some Bastards

Press 0 at the start menu to load an extra block of code and play Manic Mining Robot's Day Out, yet another Jet Set Willy game. This one puts you in the role of the robot from the first level of Manic Miner.

screenshot

Match Point

There is an anti-piracy message hidden in the code: IF YOU HAVE DISASSEMBLED THIS CODE,AND INTEND MAKING COPYS FOR RESALE,FRIENDS OR OTHER BEAR IN MIND YOU ARE A THIEF AND THAT 4 PEOPLE SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF TIME ,EFFORT AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS PRODUCING THIS PROGRAM:- STEVE ,ANN,MARIA AND STEVE T. A FEW QUID ISN'T MUCH TO PAY . DEDICATED TO THE GIRL WHO TAKES MY BREATH AWAY... AND IT'S THE GREATEST THING.

Mercenary

In sector 13-04, there is a sign bearing the Commodore logo. If you shoot it down, you are told, "Good show!"

screenshot

Midnight Resistance

After redefining the control keys, when asked KEYS OK? (Y/N), there are two secret messages you can type. WE WANT TO HEAR MUSIC takes you to a music test menu where you can hear every tune in the game, and HELLO JIMMY BAGLEY shows the message HELLO JIM. and temporarily changes the title menu's scrolling text to read: HELLO FIRST OF ALL TO JIMMY AND JACQUI... MUM, PAT AND NIGE, CRAIG, DONNA, DAVE AND CAROLE AND KIDS, KATHY AND JOHN AND FAMILY, CHRIS WEBSTER, LEE, NIBS, DAVE WORTON, PAUL GRIFFITHS, CHRIS WORTON,

Moon Alert

Quite far into the game, there are references to Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner (JET-SET WHO?, below an NCB [National Coal Board] miner's hat) and to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (DON'T PANIC).

Nodes of Yesod

There is a hidden message in the code: ZAP LOAD BY LEE GRIFFITHS © 1985 YS KEEP OUT!!! L.F.C. RULE. YS is presumably Your Sinclair magazine, and LFC is the Liverpool football club.

Oink!

There is a hidden message in the code: Poetry Time: There was a young lady from Wath. She lived in Wath. She walked in Wath. She talked in Wath. She bonked in Wath..........Where is Wath anyway ?

Two other messages can occur in the event of a tape loading error: What's happened to the volume ? and That was very, very naughty.

Pang

There is different background music for each multiloaded block of levels, but a bug in the code means that only the first set of tunes ever get played. (The AY file on World of Spectrum includes all of the tunes.)

Pheenix

There is a hidden message in the code:

PROGRAMSWANTED!writeto16WhileRoadSuttonColdfieldW.Mids.fordetails

Psytron

There is a hidden message in the code:

DEAR FIONA
YOU ARE TOO PRECIOUS FOR MERE WORDS
BUT MAYBE I LOVE YOU WILL DO?

SOMETIMES LATE AT NIGHT I HEAR YOU CRY
WHILE I LIE AWAKE AND WONDER WHY
SOMEONE SO GOOD AND TRUE
COULD GET SO UPSET,DOWN AND BLUE

BODE OLOWU:

The Quest for the Golden Eggcup (Mastertronic)

Type HARVEY, NIGEL or SAID (referring to Harvey Lodder, Nigel Brooks and Saïd Hassan) for the message: The secret password will only work when all else fails... (Any of these will get you out of the dungeon where you are sent for typing rude words — except the first time, when you must DIG to find a trapdoor.)

Type PAUL COOK for the message: Paul hasn't really got spots, it only looks that way.

Quest for the Holy Joystick

There is a code block called willies!, as evidenced by the hidden text in the loading screen.

Rescue (Mastertronic)

Press Break on the title screen and you will be presented with the Tatung Einstein startup screen.

Riptoff

There are various hidden messages in the code: AARGH! MY KNEE IS NOT PURPLE!!! ALL MUSIC ARRANGED & PROGRAMMED FOR THE 128k SPECTRUM BY RICK_O'NEILL TO USE THE TUNES, POKE 64161,TUNE NO. (0 TO 3) RANDOMIZE USR 64160. THE ONLY REASON THIS RUBBISH ISHERE IS TO FILL UP THE REST OF THIS BANK OF MEMORY. IT ISN'T OFMUCH USE TO ANYBODY. LOAD IN THE EDITOR LOADER PROG AND DO 'GOTO 40' TREE! P.S. I DINNY USE AN ASSEMBLER COS AH HUVNY GOAT YIN YA BEAUT; Screen Splitter . . Wre-Writ end of July 1990.; Yes, indeed! That was the control routine for this screen clearing thingy. Here's some colours:; RIPTOFF - CREDITS Design, coding, graphics - Rick O'Neill 128k Music arranged and programmed by Rick O'Neill Level designs: 5,6,8,10 & 13 - Craig Hunter 7 - Rick 1,3,9,11,12,14 & 15 - Rick & Craig 2 - Paul "JAFFA" Mellia It is highly recommended that you play this game using the KEYBOARD. Joysticks weren't designed for it.; This program is a PATCHWORK program. All it does is jump around all over the shop! It is, I'll admit, a bit silly and completely CRAP!!; Hello There! Just a few words on the bloody terrible programming in this so-called game. It's absolutely FUCKING CRAP!! OO! Bad words! Personally, I like the actual game, but the graphics are terrible! The 128k Music took about a month to do!

There is also a hidden message in the level editor: Hello there! Welcome to my wee bit of gibbering rubbish! . . . As I have said already the programming isn't very good! The main problem is that, in the main game especially, I often want to add new features and I do this as follows:- First, write the thing. Then see if I can find some spare memory. If I can't, cut the routine down in length, if possible, and try again! Once I've done this, I then have to find a way of calling it at the right time. This means writing clumsy patches from other bits of the program. Now I've explained, maybe you can forgive me?

Robin of the Wood

There is a hidden message in the code, which — strangely enough — refers to Nodes of Yesod and not Robin of the Wood: I LOVE HEATHER - MAX X X X! Welcome to Nodes of Yesod, from :- MAX B. COUNT - and everyone else!. Stuart Fotheringham explains, "Steve Wetherill also included I LOVE YOU HEATHER! at the end of the scrolling message in Arc of Yesod and was nearly fired, because we had to call all the cassettes back and remaster them."

Also present in the code are the names of some musical artists (but who is Lynn?): Depeche Mode, New Order, Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, Lynn Fairclough, Everything but the Girl, Chris Rea, Erasure, Lynn Fairclough (again).

Speedlock

Games protected with Speedlock often contain hidden messages.

The Last Mohican's tape loader has the messages:
CRACKING ANY SPEEDLOCK PROGRAM WHICH IS DEAD DEAD EASY IMPROVES YOUR SEX LIFE
HELLO MUM
HI TO SU

Bruce Lee and Quartet (among others) have the messages:
BUG OFF YOU BIG WALLY
AND UP YOURS
SPEEDLOCK Protection System © DJL Software & D. Aubrey Jones 1984 - Tel:0793 724317 * Government Health Warning - Attempting to crack SPEEDLOCK can damage your sanity!

Lee Prince says, "I've definitely seen these messages in other early Speedlock games too, but I can't remember which ones offhand — presumably, Ocean/US Gold/Imagine games released around the same time as Bruce Lee (late 1984/early 1985)."

Spellbound (Mastertronic)

Use MERGE "" to get into the BASIC loader of the 48K version, and edit the single program line by adding and removing a space. Tetris

The code contains the following message, which is displayed if you press O for the options screen while memory location 39999 contains the value 33. I don't know how you'd usually achieve this, and it isn't clear what the "cheat mode" actually does, if there is one.

....HOLD IT......HMMM.....THE CHEAT MODE IS NOW OPERATIVE..............A QUICK HELLO TO EVERYONE AT MIRRORSOFT, ESPECIALLY EVERYONE IN THE PRODUCT DEPARTMENT AND US TELEPHONE SUPPORT PEOPLE. ALSO THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED AND THOSE WHO HAD FAITH IN ME..IE JC..CHEERS. YOU CAN SEE WHAT THE CHOICES ARE, SO PICK ONE. HAVE FUN !!!!!!

Finishing all 100 levels earns you a curious message: FANTASTIC! YOU HAVE FINISHED TETRIS 2. THAT MEANS EITHER YOU HAVE CHEATED, OR YOU ARE NOT HUMAN! ANYWAY: FUCK YOU!

Enter the level code WHO AM I to play Trashout, a hidden Breakout clone by Chris Pile. It was previously released as both Crashout and Smashout. However, this hidden version is credited to Ewvbean Hadd ("you've been had") of Lorate ("low rate") Software!

The code includes strings like POLICE and TAX COLLECTED that also appear in Sim City (by the same author), which might indicate that it was assembled after Sim City had been previously loaded into memory.

Zub

Load the game in 128K mode, start a new game, and press keys 2468 together to activate the cheat mode. Now press keys 1357 together to start LightFarce, a hidden subgame with parallax scrolling. (LightFarce was later released independently as Zarjas on the first Sinclair User cover tape.)

LightFarce has its own high score table, which contains the following messages:
